Acts 9 - World English Bible with Greek

1 But Saul, still breathing threats and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

1 ὁ δὲ σαῦλος, ἔτι ἐμπνέων ἀπειλῆς καὶ φόνου εἰς τοὺς μαθητὰς τοῦ κυρίου, προσελθὼν τῶ ἀρχιερεῖ

2 and asked for letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

2 ᾐτήσατο παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐπιστολὰς εἰς δαμασκὸν πρὸς τὰς συναγωγάς, ὅπως ἐάν τινας εὕρῃ τῆς ὁδοῦ ὄντας, ἄνδρας τε καὶ γυναῖκας, δεδεμένους ἀγάγῃ εἰς ἰερουσαλήμ.

3 As he traveled, it happened that he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him.

3 ἐν δὲ τῶ πορεύεσθαι ἐγένετο αὐτὸν ἐγγίζειν τῇ δαμασκῶ, ἐξαίφνης τε αὐτὸν περιήστραψεν φῶς ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ,

4 He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"

4 καὶ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἤκουσεν φωνὴν λέγουσαν αὐτῶ, σαοὺλ σαούλ, τί με διώκεις;

5 He said, "Who are you, Lord?" The Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.{TR adds "It's hard for you to kick against the goads."}

5 εἶπεν δέ, τίς εἶ, κύριε; ὁ δέ, ἐγώ εἰμι ἰησοῦς ὃν σὺ διώκεις·

6 But{TR omits "But" } rise up, and enter into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

6 ἀλλὰ ἀνάστηθι καὶ εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ λαληθήσεταί σοι ὅ τί σε δεῖ ποιεῖν.

7 The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the sound, but seeing no one.

7 οἱ δὲ ἄνδρες οἱ συνοδεύοντες αὐτῶ εἱστήκεισαν ἐνεοί, ἀκούοντες μὲν τῆς φωνῆς μηδένα δὲ θεωροῦντες.

8 Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no one. They led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

8 ἠγέρθη δὲ σαῦλος ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς, ἀνεῳγμένων δὲ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ οὐδὲν ἔβλεπεν· χειραγωγοῦντες δὲ αὐτὸν εἰσήγαγον εἰς δαμασκόν.

9 He was without sight for three days, and neither ate nor drank.

9 καὶ ἦν ἡμέρας τρεῖς μὴ βλέπων, καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγεν οὐδὲ ἔπιεν.

10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias!" He said, "Behold, it's me, Lord."

10 ἦν δέ τις μαθητὴς ἐν δαμασκῶ ὀνόματι ἁνανίας, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν ὁράματι ὁ κύριος, ἁνανία. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ ἐγώ, κύριε.

11 The Lord said to him, "Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying,

11 ὁ δὲ κύριος πρὸς αὐτόν, ἀναστὰς πορεύθητι ἐπὶ τὴν ῥύμην τὴν καλουμένην εὐθεῖαν καὶ ζήτησον ἐν οἰκίᾳ ἰούδα σαῦλον ὀνόματι ταρσέα· ἰδοὺ γὰρ προσεύχεται,

12 and in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight."

12 καὶ εἶδεν ἄνδρα [ἐν ὁράματι] ἁνανίαν ὀνόματι εἰσελθόντα καὶ ἐπιθέντα αὐτῶ [τὰς] χεῖρας ὅπως ἀναβλέψῃ.

13 But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he did to your saints at Jerusalem.

13 ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ἁνανίας, κύριε, ἤκουσα ἀπὸ πολλῶν περὶ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τούτου, ὅσα κακὰ τοῖς ἁγίοις σου ἐποίησεν ἐν ἰερουσαλήμ·

14 Here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name."

14 καὶ ὧδε ἔχει ἐξουσίαν παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων δῆσαι πάντας τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους τὸ ὄνομά σου.

15 But the Lord said to him, "Go your way, for he is my chosen vessel to bear my name before the nations and kings, and the children of Israel.

15 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος, πορεύου, ὅτι σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς ἐστίν μοι οὖτος τοῦ βαστάσαι τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐνώπιον ἐθνῶν τε καὶ βασιλέων υἱῶν τε ἰσραήλ·

16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name's sake."

16 ἐγὼ γὰρ ὑποδείξω αὐτῶ ὅσα δεῖ αὐτὸν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ὀνόματός μου παθεῖν.

17 Ananias departed, and entered into the house. Laying his hands on him, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord, who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me, that you may receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

17 ἀπῆλθεν δὲ ἁνανίας καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, καὶ ἐπιθεὶς ἐπ᾽ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας εἶπεν, σαοὺλ ἀδελφέ, ὁ κύριος ἀπέσταλκέν με, ἰησοῦς ὁ ὀφθείς σοι ἐν τῇ ὁδῶ ᾗ ἤρχου, ὅπως ἀναβλέψῃς καὶ πλησθῇς πνεύματος ἁγίου.

18 Immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he received his sight. He arose and was baptized.

18 καὶ εὐθέως ἀπέπεσαν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ὡς λεπίδες, ἀνέβλεψέν τε, καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐβαπτίσθη,

19 He took food and was strengthened. Saul stayed several days with the disciples who were at Damascus.

19 καὶ λαβὼν τροφὴν ἐνίσχυσεν. ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐν δαμασκῶ μαθητῶν ἡμέρας τινάς,

20 Immediately in the synagogues he proclaimed the Christ, that he is the Son of God.

20 καὶ εὐθέως ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς ἐκήρυσσεν τὸν ἰησοῦν ὅτι οὖτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.

21 All who heard him were amazed, and said, "Isn't this he who in Jerusalem made havoc of those who called on this name? And he had come here intending to bring them bound before the chief priests!"

21 ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες καὶ ἔλεγον, οὐχ οὖτός ἐστιν ὁ πορθήσας εἰς ἰερουσαλὴμ τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους τὸ ὄνομα τοῦτο, καὶ ὧδε εἰς τοῦτο ἐληλύθει ἵνα δεδεμένους αὐτοὺς ἀγάγῃ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς;

22 But Saul increased more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived at Damascus, proving that this is the Christ.

22 σαῦλος δὲ μᾶλλον ἐνεδυναμοῦτο καὶ συνέχυννεν [τοὺς] ἰουδαίους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν δαμασκῶ, συμβιβάζων ὅτι οὖτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός.

23 When many days were fulfilled, the Jews conspired together to kill him,

23 ὡς δὲ ἐπληροῦντο ἡμέραι ἱκαναί, συνεβουλεύσαντο οἱ ἰουδαῖοι ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν·

24 but their plot became known to Saul. They watched the gates both day and night that they might kill him,

24 ἐγνώσθη δὲ τῶ σαύλῳ ἡ ἐπιβουλὴ αὐτῶν. παρετηροῦντο δὲ καὶ τὰς πύλας ἡμέρας τε καὶ νυκτὸς ὅπως αὐτὸν ἀνέλωσιν·

25 but his disciples took him by night, and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a basket.

25 λαβόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ νυκτὸς διὰ τοῦ τείχους καθῆκαν αὐτὸν χαλάσαντες ἐν σπυρίδι.

26 When Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join himself to the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.

26 παραγενόμενος δὲ εἰς ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐπείραζεν κολλᾶσθαι τοῖς μαθηταῖς· καὶ πάντες ἐφοβοῦντο αὐτόν, μὴ πιστεύοντες ὅτι ἐστὶν μαθητής.

27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared to them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.

27 βαρναβᾶς δὲ ἐπιλαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἤγαγεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους, καὶ διηγήσατο αὐτοῖς πῶς ἐν τῇ ὁδῶ εἶδεν τὸν κύριον καὶ ὅτι ἐλάλησεν αὐτῶ, καὶ πῶς ἐν δαμασκῶ ἐπαρρησιάσατο ἐν τῶ ὀνόματι τοῦ ἰησοῦ.

28 He was with them entering into{TR and NU add "and going out"} Jerusalem,

28 καὶ ἦν μετ᾽ αὐτῶν εἰσπορευόμενος καὶ ἐκπορευόμενος εἰς ἰερουσαλήμ, παρρησιαζόμενος ἐν τῶ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου,

29 preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. He spoke and disputed against the Grecian Jews, but they were seeking to kill him.

29 ἐλάλει τε καὶ συνεζήτει πρὸς τοὺς ἑλληνιστάς· οἱ δὲ ἐπεχείρουν ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν.

30 When the brothers{The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} knew it, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him off to Tarsus.

30 ἐπιγνόντες δὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ κατήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς καισάρειαν καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὸν εἰς ταρσόν.

31 So the assemblies throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, and were built up. They were multiplied, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

31 ἡ μὲν οὗν ἐκκλησία καθ᾽ ὅλης τῆς ἰουδαίας καὶ γαλιλαίας καὶ σαμαρείας εἶχεν εἰρήνην, οἰκοδομουμένη καὶ πορευομένη τῶ φόβῳ τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ τῇ παρακλήσει τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐπληθύνετο.

32 It happened, as Peter went throughout all those parts, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda.

32 ἐγένετο δὲ πέτρον διερχόμενον διὰ πάντων κατελθεῖν καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἁγίους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας λύδδα.

33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, because he was paralyzed.

33 εὖρεν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπόν τινα ὀνόματι αἰνέαν ἐξ ἐτῶν ὀκτὼ κατακείμενον ἐπὶ κραβάττου, ὃς ἦν παραλελυμένος.

34 Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed!" Immediately he arose.

34 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῶ ὁ πέτρος, αἰνέα, ἰᾶταί σε ἰησοῦς χριστός· ἀνάστηθι καὶ στρῶσον σεαυτῶ. καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέστη.

35 All who lived at Lydda and in Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

35 καὶ εἶδαν αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες λύδδα καὶ τὸν σαρῶνα, οἵτινες ἐπέστρεψαν ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον.

36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which when translated, means Dorcas.{"Dorcas" is Greek for "Gazelle."} This woman was full of good works and acts of mercy which she did.

36 ἐν ἰόππῃ δέ τις ἦν μαθήτρια ὀνόματι ταβιθά, ἣ διερμηνευομένη λέγεται δορκάς· αὕτη ἦν πλήρης ἔργων ἀγαθῶν καὶ ἐλεημοσυνῶν ὧν ἐποίει.

37 It happened in those days that she fell sick, and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper chamber.

37 ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἀσθενήσασαν αὐτὴν ἀποθανεῖν· λούσαντες δὲ ἔθηκαν [αὐτὴν] ἐν ὑπερῴῳ.

38 As Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men{Reading from NU, TR; MT omits "two men"} to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them.

38 ἐγγὺς δὲ οὔσης λύδδας τῇ ἰόππῃ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἀκούσαντες ὅτι πέτρος ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ ἀπέστειλαν δύο ἄνδρας πρὸς αὐτὸν παρακαλοῦντες, μὴ ὀκνήσῃς διελθεῖν ἕως ἡμῶν.

39 Peter got up and went with them. When he had come, they brought him into the upper chamber. All the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.

39 ἀναστὰς δὲ πέτρος συνῆλθεν αὐτοῖς· ὃν παραγενόμενον ἀνήγαγον εἰς τὸ ὑπερῶον, καὶ παρέστησαν αὐτῶ πᾶσαι αἱ χῆραι κλαίουσαι καὶ ἐπιδεικνύμεναι χιτῶνας καὶ ἱμάτια ὅσα ἐποίει μετ᾽ αὐτῶν οὗσα ἡ δορκάς.

40 Peter put them all out, and kneeled down and prayed. Turning to the body, he said, "Tabitha, get up!" She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

40 ἐκβαλὼν δὲ ἔξω πάντας ὁ πέτρος καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύξατο, καὶ ἐπιστρέψας πρὸς τὸ σῶμα εἶπεν, ταβιθά, ἀνάστηθι. ἡ δὲ ἤνοιξεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῆς, καὶ ἰδοῦσα τὸν πέτρον ἀνεκάθισεν.

41 He gave her his hand, and raised her up. Calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.

41 δοὺς δὲ αὐτῇ χεῖρα ἀνέστησεν αὐτήν, φωνήσας δὲ τοὺς ἁγίους καὶ τὰς χήρας παρέστησεν αὐτὴν ζῶσαν.

42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

42 γνωστὸν δὲ ἐγένετο καθ᾽ ὅλης τῆς ἰόππης, καὶ ἐπίστευσαν πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον.

43 It happened, that he stayed many days in Joppa with one Simon, a tanner.

43 ἐγένετο δὲ ἡμέρας ἱκανὰς μεῖναι ἐν ἰόππῃ παρά τινι σίμωνι βυρσεῖ.
